Le Terme di Caracalla: mens sana in corpore sano - Visita guidata del complesso termale

Gli antichi romani amavano concludere le loro giornate andando alle terme, per lavarsi, rilassarsi, fare attività sportive, utilizzare una libreria ma anche e soprattutto per socializzare. Visitare le Terme di Caracalla, ci fa comprendere come dovevano essere i complessi termali di epoca imperiale. Nella loro struttura, rimasta libera da edifici moderni, anche se spogliata della decorazione originaria, è ancora percettibile l’atmosfera di lusso che caratterizzava le grandi sale dagli alti soffitti. Costruite tra il 212 e il 217 d.C., per la loro realizzazione fu creato un ramo speciale dell’ acquedotto dell’Acqua Marcia, “l’Acqua Antoniana”, che oltrepassava la Via Appia sull’Arco di Druso. Il recinto esterno fu invece opera degli ultimi due imperatori della dinastia dei Severi, Eliogabalo e Alessandro Severo. Vari lavori di restauro furono realizzati da Aureliano, Diocleziano e Teodorico. Le terme cessarono di funzionare nel 537 d.C. in seguito al taglio degli acquedotti ad opera di Vitige, re dei Goti.
